• What departments does the lab have?

The HERP Lab includes the Research, Animal Care, and Social Media departments. Members of the Research Department run experimental trials, collect and analyze data, and write scientific papers. The Animal Care Department maintains terrariums, feeds lab animals (our crested geckos and invert colonies), records environmental data, and ensures lab animal welfare. The Social Media Department writes regular blog posts, advertises lab activities, and connects with the community to educate and generate interest. 

• How does the lab work and what does it focus on?

The HERP Lab’s goal is to conduct research to improve the welfare of domestic reptiles and amphibians. Areas of focus include finding ways to replicate an animal’s natural habitat in captivity, behavioral research to support intellectual stimulation, and more. Research can be done either on campus using animals directly, with our local partnered institutions, or online through databases and other resources. 

• What is the expected time commitment for the lab?

Time commitments can vary depending on the department you join, your position in the lab, and the projects you are assigned to. Entry-level positions may demand 5-10 hrs a week, depending on our tasks and time of year. We are pretty good at working around you and your schedule! The most time-intensive department is Research, which typically demands at least an hour a day, with additional hours often expected during experimental trials. Managerial positions, regardless of department, may also demand slightly more time. 

• Are there paid positions?

No lab positions are paid, but there is still plenty of value in joining! Here you will develop your animal handling, data collection, research, communication, and writing abilities to make you more marketable later on. Additionally, the lab networks with groups in the local area and beyond to connect you with future opportunities. We travel to conferences and other reptile-related events annually, and all students are welcome. 

• What is being in the lab like? 

Students can work on many projects on their own time, outside the lab. Occasionally, we run physical trials, which almost always take place on campus, but some projects may involve traveling to locations outside of campus, like ZooTampa or more natural spaces. We put a lot of effort into creating a culture where everyone feels welcome and connected, so there are plenty of social events throughout the year!

Training will begin in early October. Anyone, regardless of class, major, or experience level, may apply to any department.
